2 - 750ml 2010 Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli ‘Siepi’

From the private cellars of Mary & Joe Smallwood, purchased and stored with passion in Naples, Florida.

Once upon a time, most Italian wine was rustic and simple, composed of local grape varieties vinified in low-tech fashion. Everything changed in 1971, when Piero Antinori blended a small amount of Cabernet into his Chianti Classico, Tignanello, and ignited the Super Tuscan revolution. Before long, Tuscan wine catapulted into the top tier of international collectibles. Rather than being made from a blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and white grapes, Chianti was more likely to contain Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, or to contain nothing but Sangiovese.

These three wines stand at the top of the Super Tuscan pyramid. Le Pergola Torte from Montevertine, composed of grapes from the oldest vines in Radda, was first released in 1977. Fontodi’s Flaccianello della Pieve comes from densely plated vineyards and is matured for 24 months in French oak barrels. Both wines are composed of 100% Sangiovese. Siepi Mazzei, the first “Super” Chianti Classico, is a blend of 92% Sangiovese and 8% Malvasia Nero and Colorino. Any of these wines would be delightful to own, but the three of them together are the equivalent of hitting the trifecta.

INSIDER’S INFO: Wine must be picked up at the Naples Winter Wine Festival office or shipped at the winning bidder’s expense.
