6 – 750ml 2011 Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
From the private cellars of Judith A. Liegeois & John Scot Mueller, purchased and stored with passion in Naples, Florida.
Winemaking at Caymus is a family affair. The family first came to California from Missouri in 1857; in 1972, Caymus Vineyards was founded by Chuck Wagner with his parents, Charlie & Lorna. The third generation, Charlie, is currently in charge at Mer Soleil, their Chardonnay property in the Santa Lucia Highlands; his sister Jenny is the winemaker for the family’s Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. At Caymus, however, the focus is on Cabernet Sauvignon, made from grapes farmed in eight of the valley’s 16 appellations.
The Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, produced only in the best vintages, represents the finest barrels in the winery. It’s the only wine in the world to be twice honored as the Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year,” in the 1984 and 1990 vintages. Here are some excerpts from Chuck Wagner’s winemaker notes for 2011: “A rich, dense ruby color hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant…on the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe black fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich yet has a velvety quality with supple density.”
This classic and beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon is drinkable now and will last into the future with proper aging.
INSIDER’S INFO: Wine must be picked up at the Naples Winter Wine Festival office or shipped at the winning bidder’s expense.
