6 – 750ml 2013 Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon
From the private cellars of Nancy & Joe Masterson, purchased and stored with passion in Naples, Florida.
In 1972, the late John Shafer moved his family from Chicago to Napa Valley and purchased vineyard land in the Stags Leap District. Shafer ignored the valley floor in favor of hillsides with thin, volcanic soils and good drainage—the type of land that had been producing world-class wine for centuries in France, Italy and Germany. His son Doug joined him as winemaker in 1983, and the reputation of Shafer Vineyards skyrocketed in the decades that followed.
Much of that reputation was built on Hillside Select, a wine sourced from a collection of 14 small vineyard blocks that produces the best fruit in the Shafer portfolio. The remote hillside location results in extremely low yields and intense flavors. Hillside Select is an exercise in extreme winemaking: on the steepest upper portions of the vineyards, dynamite had to be used to clear truck-sized boulders. The wine ages in new French oak barrels for 32 months before bottling, then rests for another year in bottle before release. The 2013 received an aggregated score of 95 points and is well on its way to becoming a modern legend.
INSIDER’S INFO: Wine must be picked up at the Naples Winter Wine Festival office or shipped at the winning bidder’s expense.
