From the private cellars of Susan & Gary Garrabrant, purchased and stored with passion in Naples, Florida.

Over the years, Sine Qua Non has given new meaning to the term “cult wine.” Proprietor Manfred Krankl and his wife, Elaine, began making wine as a hobby in 1994. At first, they experimented with white wines and Pinot Noir, but slowly and gradually gravitated toward Rhône-style blends. One year later they produced their first Syrah, which received a 95-point rating from Robert Parker, Jr. Krankl was co-owner of Campanile restaurant in Los Angeles at the time, and thus had a ready market for his “passion project.”

Sine Qua Non has evolved over the years, both in terms of quality and quirkiness. Krankl makes a profusion of wines with different names each year, and illustrates the labels with his own linocut art. How successful are they? 100% of his wine is sold through a mailing list, there’s a nine-year wait to get on the list, and bottles have sold for thousands of dollars on the after-market. These wines will please and dazzle you with their depth of concentration and purity of fruit. While they will have a family resemblance to each other, they are all unique and unforgettable.

INSIDER’S INFO: Wine must be picked up at the Naples Winter Wine Festival office or shipped at the winning bidder’s expense.
