The name of Che Fico, one of San Francisco’s hottest dining spots at the moment, is an Italian colloquialism literally translating to “What a fig” but more broadly meaning “That’s so cool!” And cool is an understatement: when you’re lucky enough to get in, you ascend to the upstairs dining room, settle in at the counter or one of the communal tables, and experience food you won’t find anywhere else. Co-owners David Nayfeld and Matt Brewer are serving up a rustic, market-driven mix of pizza, pasta, house made salumi, meat and fish along with dishes from the Cucina Ebraica, the Jewish-Roman culinary heritage. The restaurant is housed in a historic building constructed as a stable after the Great Fire of 1906 and completely reconfigured with an award-winning design. Che Fico has recently recived rave reviews from the New York Times and The Washington Post as well as being named one of Bon Appetit's Hot Ten new restaurants in the country in 2018.
Your party of six will be seated at the chef’s counter and experience a special tasting menu with wine pairings. You might start with Ora King Salmon Crudo or the chef’s selection of salumi, progress to gnocchi with white Italian truffles or Mafaldine Pesto Genovese, then dig into whole grilled rock cod or crispy skin suckling pig. An assortment of creative craft cocktails and small-batch wines will accompany your meal. You’ll be the envy of the neighborhood, and you’ll leave much cooler than when you arrived.
