There were only 12 bonded wineries in Washington State’s Columbia Valley when Alex Golitzin established Quilceda Creek in 1978, compared to over 900 today. Despite the explosive growth all around it, Quilceda Creek remains at the very top of the state’s quality pyramid. The lesser-known story is how the legacy of the Golitzin family intertwines with the history of wine.

Alex’s ancestor Prince Lev Sergeevich Galitzine, the godfather of Russian sparkling wine, gained fame as the winemaker at the Massandra and Novy Svet estates. Tsar Nicolas II proclaimed himself a fan of the Novy Svet sparkling wine, and the Prince made a gift of the estate to the Emperor upon retirement. His descendants, the Golitzins, fled to Paris during the Revolution. Following World War II, Alex Golitzin and his family emigrated to San Francisco. As a youth, Alex spent time in Napa with another godfather of wine—his maternal uncle, the great Andre Tchelistcheff. Alex’s son Paul operates the winery today.

The winery is dedicated to the production of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and makes vineyard-designated wines (Palengat, Galitzine and Horse Heaven Hills) as well as a blend (the Columbia Valley Red Wine). The Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is Quilceda Creek’s benchmark wine, earning five 100-point scores from Robert Parker, Jr. Finding any Quilceda Creek wines, in any vintage, is a happy circumstance; being able to drink well-aged and perfectly matured examples is an unforgettable experience.

INSIDER’S INFO: Wine must be picked up at the Naples Children & Education Foundation office or shipped at the winning bidder’s expense.
