1 – 1.5 Liter 2003 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht “Rangen de Thann, Clos Saint Urbain” Grand Cru Pinot Gris
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 as a result of the marriage between Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, and quickly became one of the grandest estates in Alsace. The Humbrecht family had been growing wine grapes in the region since 1620. Today the Domaine consists of nearly 100 acres of mostly Grand Cru vines, managed by Léonard’s son Olivier, who was the first Frenchman to become a Master of Wine.
While Pinot Gris may technically be the same variety as the Italian Pinot Grigio, it is one of the four noble grapes of Alsace and is almost totally unrecognizable in its French incarnation. It is rich, substantial and highly structured, even capable of being made as a dessert wine under the right conditions. 2003 was an exceptional vintage in Alsace: there was an early budburst and flowering, followed by a scorchingly hot summer that produced wines of great character. This amazing collection of large-format Pinot Gris, direct from the winery cellars, reflects three unique sites and demonstrates the range of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht’s talent.
