Larry Stone is a living legend in the world wine community. In 1988 he became the ninth American to pass the Master Sommelier exam, then followed that up by winning the “Best International Sommelier in French Wines” competition in Paris. He helped develop restaurants such as Charley Trotter’s and Rubicon, ran his own négociant winery, and created and sold another.
At his winery Lingua Franca (which translates as "honest tongue"), Larry works with consulting winemaker Dominique Lafon and DRC-and-Domaine Dujac--trained winemaker Thomas Savre to craft small amounts of stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Even though Lingua Franca’s first vintage was as recent as 2015, the wine is already featured on the lists of prestigious restaurants such as Le Taillevent, Alain Ducasse, Le Bernardin, Sophie Pic, French Laundry, Auberge de Carmel, Canlis, Gavroche (London), and the Tokyo Park Hyatt (featured in "Lost in Translation").
The winning bidder’s party of eight will experience a virtual tasting of Lingua Franca with Larry Stone. Larry will take you through four of his highly rated Oregon wines, including 2017 Sisters Chardonnay, 2018 Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay, 2017 Mimi’s Mind Pinot Noir and 2018 The Plow Pinot Noir.
The 2018 Estate Chardonnay was selected as the finest example of Oregon Chardonnay by Decanter magazine in August 2020, which compared it to fine White Burgundy. The same month, Robb Report rated 2017 Sisters Chardonnay as one of the top 10 wines in the Willamette Valley. 2018 The Plow has received scores in the mid-90s from every critic. Finally, Mimi’s Mind has been rated very highly every year by critics. The 2015 Mimi's Mind, its first appearance, garnered 18pts from Jancis Robinson, about the highest score she has ever given for a young Pinot Noir from the New World, while Robb Report named it as one of the top 14 wines in the world, on a list that included 2014 Penfolds Grange and 2002 Dom Perignon P2 in the “Best of the Best” issue in 2019. Larry will guide us through the 2017 vintage of Mimi's Mind.
Kent Torrey, the renowned authority on pairing cheese and wine and the owner of The Cheese Shop in Carmel, CA, will choose cheese pairings for the wines and will ship those cheeses to the winning bidders.
Between each wine, Brett Moore a fabulous singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has performed with many famous bands including Fleetwood Mac, Willie Nelson and The Wild Feathers, will sing previously submitted requests from the winning bidder(s).
The winner will also receive a tour and tasting for four at Lingua Franca whenever they would like to go.
INSIDER’S INFO: Wines and cheeses will be shipped directly to the winning bidder. Tasting and concert to be scheduled for a mutually agreeable date. Song requests may be submitted in advance to Brett Moore. If/when deemed safe by all participants, package can be completed in person.
